Facebook: Placing Ads and Boosting Posts

Placing an advertisement on Facebook is easier and less expensive than you may think.  After reading in Dave Kerpin’s book Likeable Social Media about how he places Facebook ads targeting his wife,
decided to place one wishing my wife a Happy 12th Anniversary.  I tried from my account first, but the settings have to be public in order to purchase an ad, and my account is private.  So I used a public page (Mprovements Inc) which I had made years ago for my own business, which is not currently operating but it may again in the future, to place the ad.  It is easy to make a page, for example I could have made a page just for Celebrating Our 12th Anniversary.  I updated the profile picture with my wife’s picture, so that she would see it and know that it was for her, or at least be drawn in.  Also any of our friends would see it and wonder why her picture was on this ad from a local business.  There are many options to choose from when targeting your ad.  The process is really easy, where a beginner can start out simple and then get more sophisticated later.  Since the costs are low, it would not be that expensive to try it out and learn some new techniques as you go.  The Facebook ad creation takes the user through the process:

·         Choosing your objective
·         Naming your campaign
·         Choosing your audience
·         Setting your budget and ad schedule
·         Setting your bid
·         Naming your ad set
·         Choosing your images
·         Adding text/links and choosing your ad placements
·         Placing your order and choosing how you want to pay for your ads

The audience for my campaign, which included two ads, was filtered down to 20 people.  I wanted to keep the group small to keep costs down, but also wanted to be sure that my wife was included in the target audience.  I later learned that the cost is so minimal that the audience could have been larger.  The ads appears on the side bar of desktop versions and in the news feed of mobile versions.  There is a lot of data that can be analyzed for the performance of the ad including the number of people it reached, number of times clicked and/or liked, and associated costs.

I also posted a message to my wife on the Mprovements Inc. business page so that when my wife clicked on the ad she would see it.  My sister and one of our friends were the first to like the page from the ad.  My wife was very happy when she finally saw the ad and then the post.  I usually do not say much on Facebook, so the fact that I did this surprised and impressed her.  It made me happy too and was actually pretty fun.  I had set the budget for the ad campaign at $20, but it only cost $1.77 (since the target audience was so small) and created 5 page likes.   Another option to drive people to your page and create connections with people is to promote a post which is also easy and relatively inexpensive compared to traditional advertising.   I set my budget at $5 and sent it out there.  There are many options to select in order to select a target audience for the post.  You can see that at the time of this blog, I spent $4.54 and reached 2,089 people through the post boost.  1 page like and 9 post likes were created.  The page and post did get many more likes that were generated through existing friend connections as well.

Overall this was a great learning experience and I recommend everyone trying it out.  The power that Facebook has in reaching people is so enormous that it is imperative to understand how it works.  The only way to really learn is to give it a try.  Like Mprovements, Inc on Facebook
